Hand Woven Rattan Dining Chairs for Modern Homes

A dining chair gets used more than almost anything else in the house, which is why we build these to be lived with rather than looked at. The weave softens a room that leans hard on stone, tile, or painted timber, and the proportions stay compact enough that six around a table never feels crowded. They suit kitchens that have been thought about, whether the rest of the room is pared back or full of colour.

Rattan Dining Chairs With Backs and Arms

If you spend long evenings at the table, the shape of the backrest matters more than almost anything else. Ours use a curved profile that takes your weight properly while keeping the chair light in the room. For customers who want a more enclosed feel, our armed designs frame the seat while leaving the woven back open.

Teak and Rattan Dining Chairs Built to Last

Every frame is solid kiln dried teak, slow grown and hand shaped, then finished with a natural lacquer that protects the wood without hiding its grain. Teak resists warping and splitting without treatment, which is why it has been used for outdoor and marine furniture for centuries. Paired with a dual layer twisted rattan weave, the result is a dining chair that improves with age rather than tiring after a season.

Wicker Dining Chairs and What to Look For

Wicker describes the weave, not the material, which is why so many wicker dining chairs sold in the UK are actually synthetic PE rattan wrapped around a metal frame. They look convincing in photographs and feel very different in person. Our chairs use natural rattan throughout, with the weave taking two full days per chair to complete. If you are comparing options, ask what the frame is made of and what the weave is made of. The answers tell you most of what you need to know.

How Many Dining Chairs Do You Need

As a general guide, allow around 60cm of table width per chair so nobody is fighting for elbow room. A 180cm table comfortably seats six, a 150cm table seats four with room to spare. If you are pairing chairs with a round table, count the circumference rather than the diameter.

Made in Kerobokan, by Hadi and Hari

Every chair in this collection is made at the Jaya Indah workshop in Kerobokan, Bali, in batches small enough that we know which pair of hands built which chair. Hadi shapes the frames. Hari does the weaving. We visit the workshop, we pay directly, and we know the teak has been aged a minimum of forty years before harvest. When you choose one of our rattan dining chairs, you know exactly where it came from and who made it.
