Our Crafting Process

Superior craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and premium, eco-conscious materials are the foundation of every piece from The Bali Concept. We found our workshops by travelling to Bali and meeting the craftsmen in person. We chose them based on the quality of the joinery, the materials they use, and how the people who work there are paid. There are cheaper workshops making similar-looking pieces. These are not those.

The Production Process

Every piece starts with material selection. We choose what goes into each product based on how it holds up over time Construction is done by hand, start to finish, by the same craftsman. Quantities are kept small, around fifteen per batch, so each piece gets the time it needs.

In the case of our teak pieces, the timber is sourced from mature certified forests. Older growth is denser and more stable than younger wood, and less prone to warping and cracking over time. Each plank is hand-sawn, milled to dimension, and kiln-dried before a single joint is cut. Where rattan is used, it is woven by hand in a dual-layer pattern  horizontal and vertical, which gives the weave its structure and a flex that holds over years of use.

Quality Control

Quality control at this scale looks different to a factory. When a piece is made start to finish by one craftsman, accountability is built into the process rather than added at the end. The person who cuts the joint is the same person who fits it. The person who weaves the rattan sees the finished piece. They know if something is off.

Before anything ships, each piece is checked against the standard we established when we first visited the workshops. Not a checklist. A judgement made by people who have seen enough pieces to know when something is right and when it isn't.

If it isn't, it doesn't ship.

The Journey

Once a piece is finished and checked, it is packed for a journey of several thousand miles. Each piece is wrapped and packed individually before it loads into a container.

From Bali, everything ships by sea. The containers cross the Indian Ocean and take several weeks to reach the UK before arriving at our warehouse.

It arrives at your door in the same condition it left the workshop. We deliver across the UK, and we're always on hand if anything is not right.

The journey is part of what the piece is. It was not mass-manufactured, It was made in a small workshop, by someone with a name, and it has crossed an ocean to get to your home.

Meet The Makers

Lampu Workshop

Handwoven in small batches by skilled artisans, each piece is crafted using natural rattan that is soaked, shaped, and woven by hand to achieve its strength and flexibility. The process is slow and considered, with every strand pulled to the right tension to create a supportive weave that lasts. Subtle variations in tone and pattern make each piece unique, bringing warmth and character that only true handwoven craft can offer.
